Using solar power to reduce our carbon footprint

Over the last year we've invested £500,000 in turning Heatherton into a 'greener' attraction, installing 480 solar panels across two solar panel fields; one to power the park and another our Florence Springs accommodation.

Each of our glamping units also has its own dedicated solar panels.

We estimate that between 30% and 40% of the energy consumed by the activity park and accommodation now comes from our solar panels, saving between 140,000 and 180,000 kw/h per year.

Ensuring eco-friendly waste management

We've also made substantial investment in our recycling system here at Heatherton, with separate colour-coded bins located at all our waste points around the park.

- Blue for mixed paper and cardboard

- Red for plastic and cans

- Green for food waste

- Black for general waste to go into landfill

Providing electric car charging points at Florence Springs

We're in the process of installing an electric car charging point for our guests at Florence Springs Luxury Lodges and Florence Springs Glamping - we expect this to be up and running in July, with charging points for two cars at one time.

We plan to install further charging points in our Heatherton car park during 2025.

Reducing CO2 emissions with our eco-friendly biomass boiler

Our biomass boiler offers a renewable, efficient source of energy using wood pellets, fuelling the building holding our bowls stadium, play area and escape rooms.

Biomass energy is carbon neutral which helps us reduce our carbon footprint, as well as our reliance on fossil fuels.

Eliminating single-use plastic

We're committed to limiting plastic use and we are working to completely eliminate single-use plastic in our food outlets. If you're taking your food or drink away, you'll find paper-based coffee cups, wooden cutlery, wooden hot drink stirrers and paper-based takeaway packaging.

Saving energy with low-energy LED bulbs

Throughout our buildings, lighting is provided by low-energy LED bulbs to minimise energy usage.

Planting new trees

We estimate that we've planted approximately 600 new trees around Heatherton, Florence Springs and our golf course since the business was established in 1992.

In addition, our hedge maze alone was created using 5,500 young beech trees, covering an area of roughly 2,880m²!

Trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, which helps to mitigate the effects of climate change. Trees also help to prevent soil erosion, regulate water cycles and support biodiversity.

Generating energy from our food waste

All our food waste is collected by Cwm Environmental who use a process called anaerobic digestion to break down the waste. This produces biogas; a renewable energy source which is fed back into the National Grid.

Growing wild and supporting ecosystems

The beautiful expanses of wildflowers and woodland between each of our Florence Springs Glamping pitches are designed not only to give our glampers privacy, but to provide valuable support for insects and other wildlife.

We also have 3 bee hives and a number of bird nesting boxes and bug hotels dotted around the sites to further encourage wildlife to thrive.

After shearing, we even leave our alpaca wool for birds to use for nesting!

And in our Tree Tops Trail woods, a number of trees are excluded from the course to help take care of protected species.

Limiting use of chemical fertilisers

Since welcoming our three friendly alpacas at Florence Springs, they've been providing us with a valuable natural resource - their poo!!

By using their poo as a fertiliser, we've reduced the amount of chemical fertiliser needed.
